The cut and thrust of the hustings, the buzz of the polling station, the drama of the count and the thrill of the result… Not the real General Election, but much more important – the Saltash Community School mock election: Vote Saltash 2019! Over the weeks leading up to December 12th nine candidates vied for the votes of the whole school – speaking in assemblies, persuading voters, and plastering their colourful posters around the site.
On the day itself a dedicated team of students helped turn the lecture theatre into a very lifelike polling station – voters queued up to register to vote, were issued with a stamped ballot paper, took it to a voting booth to vote secretly and then dropped it in the ballot box.
In the end over a thousand students and staff voted, and the final result was:
Candidate Name | Party | Votes |
Madeline BISHOP | Brexit | 66 |
Matthew CHAPMAN | Labour | 475 ELECTED |
Hayden COLE | Conservative | 167 RUNNER UP |
Christopher GLANVILLE | Wise Vote | 60 |
Hannah KENNINGTON | Green | 108 |
Henry LAMBERT-GORWYN | Communist | 68 |
Jordan MORTIMORE | Ferrum Guard | 66 |
Lewis SHAW | Monster Raving Loony | 103 |
Jade WHORLOW | Liberal Democrats | 31 |
Mrs Metters, joint returning officer, said “A huge thank you to all the students who took part: the candidates for being brave enough to stand, for fabulous campaigning and really strong assembly performances; the polling clerks for running election day seamlessly; and to everyone in school for taking part with such positive engagement. Well done, and very well done to our winner.”
