The school’s production of We Will Rock You was a huge success. The production tells the story of how a small group of “Bohemians” struggle to restore the free exchange of thought, fashion and, most of all, live music from the worldwide mega-corporation Globalsoft, which is headed by “Killer Queen”. The social outcast Galileo Figaro, together with love interest, Scaramouche, joins with the Bohemians to find the lost guitar of Queen guitarist, Brian May, and overthrow Globalsoft.
The show was directed by teacher, Emily Venner, who brought the show to life. Supported by Emily Smart and the Performing Arts department, the team was ably assisted by a fantastic group of back stage and tech students. The performance saw some incredible talent on stage with Jules and Peter taking the main roles singing their hearts out every night to packed audiences. The cast also performed to Year 6 students on the Tuesday of show week.
The band was led by Jenni Oatway (Head of Performing Arts) on piano and was made up of year 10 and 11 GCSE music students at the school. Ben, Charlie, Cameron, Jacob and Matt rehearsed every Friday after school – in fact, choosing to do We Will Rock You was partly because these students had been playing Queen songs around the department last year. They really rose to the challenge of playing such complex songs and ended the show with a fabulous version of Bohemian Rhapsody. Charlie (lead guitar) said ‘it was a great experience – playing in the band for a show takes you out of your comfort zone and gets you to learn new styles of playing’
Emily Venner said, ‘It was a real privilege leading the cast. It’s always hard work putting on a show but fantastic to see the end product and the students’ hard work come to fruition. I’d like to thank everyone that helped make the show a success, from front of house, the PTA, the musicians, the staff and the wider community’.
