A group of Sixth Form music students from saltash.net community school journeyed to London on March 26th with teacher of Music, Mr Eastman, and teacher of Maths, Mrs Hinds to attend a concert given by the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Not only was this the first opportunity these students have had to experience a full symphony orchestra in performance, but it was also a chance to see an A Level set work in a live setting.
The concert programme included an astounding performance of Salonen’s virtuosic Violin Concerto and Shostakovich’s emotionally powerful Fifth Symphony. All the students were enthralled by the experience, commenting on the dedication and focus of the orchestra, the motivation they now have to continue their study into the symphony, and the way that a live symphony orchestra has a physical as well as an emotional effect on the listener. It was a truly inspiring and memorable trip for all.
