Eighteen students from across years 9 and 10 at saltash.net community school have achieved an outstanding level of success in the UK’s Intermediate Maths Challenge.

Organised by Maths teacher, Tatiana Hinds, participation in the Intermediate Level was designed to build on years of success in the Junior challenge.  Mrs Hinds said, ‘This is the first time we have entered Year 9 and 10 for the Intermediate Maths Challenge.  I am hoping to continue this work next year and enter current Year 10 who are going to be Year 11 so that 3 year groups will have the opportunity to participate in this enrichment activity.  Each challenge leads into a follow-on Olympiad round as well as mentoring schemes and summer schools for high performing students.  It also includes the training of a team six students to represent the UK in the International Mathematical Olympiad.’

Year 10 students: Walter Stroud, Ed Gilford and Ryan Harvey performed exceptionally well in the challenge.  As a result, Walter was invited to participate in the Olympiad, the results of which are eagerly awaited.  Ed and Ryan were given the chance to take part in the Kangaroo Challenge which is an extension to the Intermediate Challenge.  It is also an international competition organised by Kangourou sans Frontieres with over six million school pupils from more than 50 countries throughout the world taking part at various levels.  saltash.net was delighted to receive news this week that Ed had achieved a Merit in this International Challenge.

Head of Maths, Alan Hawthorne, said, ‘We are fortunate enough to be inundated with gifted and talented students at saltash.net and we look for every possible opportunity to promote their achievements.’
