Defibrillator installed at saltash.net

saltash.net’s ongoing commitment to making its school environment as safe as possible for staff, students, parents and other visitors, was demonstrated earlier this term when the school acquired a defibrillator to be kept permanently on its site.

Funded by a grant from the British Heart foundation, the IPad style defibrillator will be kept during school hours in the main reception and after 4.00pm in the site manager’s office next to the Lecture Theatre and Student Services entrance.

During the week of 9th – 13th November, Healthy Schools Coordinator at saltash.net, Rachel Noble, led assemblies for the whole school to explain to the students how a defibrillator works and when it might be needed. Also assisting with the assembly was support staff member, Mrs Lorraine Booth, who gave advice on what to do if a member of the school community found someone unconscious. How to keep a healthy heart also formed part of the assembly’s message.

Headteacher, Mrs Bryce, concluded the assemblies by praising Year 9 student, Jack Phelan, who as a Fire Cadet is currently raising money to help provide another defibrillator in the town of Saltash outside the Fire Station on Callington Road. Jack will be helping to organise the school’s Christmas raffle this year and all proceeds will be going to this excellent cause.

Year 7 Leaders of Literacy - Nov '15 - Copy

saltash.net’s Year 7 Leaders of Literacy were presented with their new badges in assembly last week. The students are part of a whole school initiative to boost literacy across saltash.net community school and its partner primary schools. The year 7s have been working alongside all other year groups, creating a range of activities and schemes to elevate literacy for all students. The badges have been designed in purple to reflect the school’s ‘purple pens of progress’ ethos and to showcase the progress our Leaders will be promoting. They are wearing their badges with pride.

Visit to Duchy College

saltash.net’s commitment to its students extends beyond the time the students spend at the school. As part of its extensive Careers programme, staff at the school are always keen to monitor students’ progression routes to other providers and always emphasise the need to stay in touch once students depart from Saltash.

On Thursday 19th November, The Trematon Zone’s lead teacher, Mrs Gomer, and Head Teacher, Mrs Bryce, undertook a visit to Duchy College at Stoke Climsland, to see how two of saltash.net’s ex Zone students, Arthur Page and Tracy Pryor, were getting on in their new place of learning. Arthur is now undertaking an Agricultural studies course and Tracy an animal care programme.

Both students were doing really well and enjoying the range of vocational opportunities that Duchy College provides. Mrs Bryce and Mrs Gomer were able to catch up with all of their news over a cup of coffee and a bacon butty in the on-site Sam’s café.

Later in the day, Tracy and another ex-year 11 Zone student, Kieran, joined the rest of last year’s year 11 cohort for the school’s annual presentation evening.

Training for this year’s Ten Tors competition commenced in October with 11 students venturing out onto the moors, following news that saltash.net had secured two team places for next May’s final Ten Tors competition. Two 15 kilometre warm up walks were completed in testing conditions over Bodmin and North Dartmoor. More intense and challenging training is scheduled over the forthcoming months. Staff members, Graham Drewery, Gareth Jones and Kirsty Newberry, together with the students, all observed the minute’s silence on Remembrance Sunday during their 2nd expedition.

Mr Drewery praised all students taking part, commenting on their enthusiasm and the way they have been able to draw on past experience through such schemes as The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Enrichment Week expeditions.

Christmas Anthology

Pasties around the fire and Santa delivering presents to Cornish children on a surfboard, are just two of the creative inventions of the students from Saltash.net and Landulph Primary featured in their joint anthology called ‘A Very Cornish Christmas’. Pupils from year 5,6,7,8 and 9 submitted their poems and artwork to the organiser of the project, Ms Childs who had a tough job of deciding on the best entries to publish. Mr Buckley, Deputy Head at Saltash.net said “The children from both schools have shown such amazing imagination and creativity and have loved reading each other’s work. It has been a real pleasure to be involved with this project.” The children and staff are keen to sell as many of the books as they can so that they can fund the project again next year.

‘Annie’, the Broadway musical based upon the popular Harold Gray comic strip ‘Little Orphan Annie’ with music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charmin, was the whole school production chosen by saltash.net community school for 2015. Set in 1930s New York during the Great Depression, brave young Annie, played with remarkable skill and talent by Molly Willis from Year 8, is forced to live a life of misery at the orphanage of Miss Hannigan, characterised extremely well by Year 10 student, Molly Banks, in saltash.net’s production.
Determined to find her real parents, Annie’s luck changes when she is chosen to spend Christmas at the residence of famous billionaire, Oliver Warbucks, performed by Year 13 A Level Theatre Studies student, JJ Harding, to great acclaim from the audiences who watched the show each night during the week of 8th – 11th December.
Supporting the central characters was a very strong cast of over sixty students from across years 7-13, who all sang, danced and acted with an ability that belied their years. Bonwen Hall’s mature portrayal of Warbuck’s PA, Grace, was very well judged, as were the highly comic performances of Tommy Williams and Tiegan Aire as Rooster and Lily, the sinister side-kicks of Miss Hannigan. Adding impressive depth to many of the choral numbers were Emily Lambert, Megan Kelly, Brad Sweet, Eva Kleckham-Ager, Jasmine Leslie and Jemima Budd. Praise also needs to go the Year 12 student, Wes Hoey, who gave a fine portrayal of President Franklin D Roosevelt who was confined to a wheelchair after contracting polio.
Of course, being saltash.net, the role of Sandy the dog was of equal importance to the humans’ roles. For the performance given to 270 children from its partner primaries, one of saltash.net’s school dogs, Mollie, played Sandy, but for the four evening performances, Tilly, belonging to the Headteacher’s PA, Jude Hollyman, took the lead role and all present agreed that a ‘star was born’!
‘Annie’ was produced and directed by Head of Performing Arts, Emily Venner, ably assisted by Nicola Silvester (Musical Director and Pianist), Matt Oakes (Technical Director) and Scott Wieprecht (Teacher of Drama).
Commenting on the production, Mrs Bryce, Headteacher, said, ‘This was a perfect choice for a whole school production at this time of the year. Not only was the quality of the music, singing, acting and dancing superb, but the set design, lighting and costumes were all first class too. I would like to congratulate everyone involved and thank them for the huge amount of hard work which went into making it such a great success.’

Sixth Form students at saltash.net community school have been learning about the dangers and impact of illegal loan sharks, as part of a push by Trading Standards to highlight the risks that such money lenders pose.

A liaison officer from the Trading Standards’ Illegal Money Lending Team spoke to both year 12 and year 13 about the law surrounding loan sharks, giving several real life examples of the extreme interest rates charged, as high as 8,000,000%, and some of the harassment and intimidation used to force victims to repay.

The liaison officer also explained that anyone concerned about illegal money lending, for either themselves or others, can contact the team on 0300 555 2222. In addition to prosecuting loan sharks, the team can also get the debts cancelled.

Head of Sixth Form, Adam Killeya, who arranged the visit as part of the General Studies Programme, said, “Financial pressures are very high on families at this time of year, and students have often asked for input on these issues. If the visit prompts even one person to help someone they know avoid getting into debt to an illegal money lender, or helps them to get out of it, then that by itself makes the visits very worthwhile.”

After the year 12 talk students and staff posed with the team’s promotional shark suit.

The annual 6th Form presentation evening at saltash.net community school took place on Thursday 17th December and was attended by a very large number of ex Year 13 students with their family and friends, as well as many teachers and support staff all wanting to add their congratulations to an outstanding year group.

Headteacher, Mrs Bryce, Chair of Governors, Mrs Waghorn, and current Head of 6th Form, Mr Killeya, all welcomed those attending and emphasised how proud the school was of everything that had been achieved by the 94 students. The A Level results had been the best in the school’s history and reflected a huge amount of hard work and commitment on the part of the students as well as excellent teaching and outstanding levels of guidance and support from the 6th Form team.

Given how good the results were, it was particularly fitting that the ex Head of 6th Form, Mr Nick Scantlebury, who retired last summer, was able to return for the presentation evening to speak to the young people involved and add his congratulations.

It was also excellent that the Guest of Honour was an ex student from saltash.net, Mr Gary Davies, now a very successful business person, and management consultant and trainer. Gary spoke with the students about what it was like to walk through the doors of a brand new school back in 1965 and how important it was to find the thing you were passionate about in life and follow your dreams.

After the presentation of the A Level certificates, the following individual awards were given:

The Celebration Lunch for the Autumn Term at saltash.net took place on Wednesday 16th December and, appropriately, had a Christmas Dinner theme.

Fifty students from across years 7-13 had been selected by their Heads of Year as deserving of an extra-special award for a wide range of reasons. Assistant Headteacher, Mr Bond, who organises the celebration lunches, read out the list of students who had been nominated, and the reasons, at the start of the proceedings. Then it was time for crackers, party poppers and balloons before tucking into a delicious lunch prepared by Mrs Dawn Couch and her team in the school’s canteen.

At the end of it all, Christmas selection boxes were distributed and a final big ‘well done’ given to everyone who had been nominated.

The annual saltash.net year 7 Carol Concert took place on the last day of the Autumn Term, Friday 18th December, in St Stephen’s Church which was packed to capacity with all 240 year 7 students along with their family and friends.

Organised by the school’s Performing Arts department under the leadership of Mrs Emily Venner, the concert provided an excellent opportunity for all present to really get into the Christmas spirit, especially with everyone singing the congregational carols.

Year 7 sang two items as a whole year group: Away in a Manger and Stille Nacht, which they had learnt in German during the Autumn Term. In addition, year 7 tutor group, 7SP, sang a rousing African hymn which they had learnt when the Pearl of Africa children’s choir visited in November.

Other musical items were provided by the GCSE and A Level music students, including an item by the school’s singing group ‘Limitless’.

There were also a number of Christmas themed readings, some of which had been taken from the Christmas Poetry anthology which had been put together by students from Landulph Primary and saltash.net.

A retiring collection was taken in support of the Performing Arts department; monies will aid future school productions.

Fantastic Fundraising at saltash.net

IMG_1099 IMG_1111 IMG_1144 IMG_1149 Sponsored 12 hour row

Over £1,000 was raised during the second half of the Autumn Term for a range of charitable efforts thanks to generous and compassionate students and staff at saltash.net community school.

Year 12 students, Amber Pritchard and Shannon Reed, organised a sponsored row in the 6th Form Day Room, enlisting the help of their peers to row continuously from 7.00am to 7.00pm. Cheered on by the school community, they raised a superb £419.19 for Cancer Research.

Students lower down the school also took the initiative to organise fundraising activities, including year 9 student, Jack Phelan, who took responsibility for the Christmas raffle, raising £123.83 for his effort to reach £3,000 needed to install an IPAD SP1 Defibrillator outside the Fire Station in Saltash.

Year 10 student, Megan Kelly, along with year 12 student, Gabriella Adams, worked hard to organise a lunchtime Christmas talent show and this generated the grand total of £66.31 to go towards the Text Santa national campaign which supports a number of different charities.

In addition to these individual fundraisers, years 7-11 took part in a non-uniform day in December to help raise money for the Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust and the Kambeng Trust which supports the education of children in West Africa. This day raised an additional £500, bringing the total for the second half of the Autumn Term to £1,109.33. The overall amount raised for charity during the whole of the Autumn term was £3,484.27, an incredible outcome!

Ryan Winfield - Sports Personality of the Year

The Sports Personality of the Year for 2015-16 at saltash.net community school is Ryan Winfield. Now studying for his A Levels in the 6th Form, Ryan’s outstanding contribution to PE and games at the school resulted in his nomination for the Pip Miller Memorial Award, donated by ex-governor, Ken Martin in memory of his wife.

Head of PE, Rob Hawkins, explained the reasons why Ryan had been selected, saying, “This young man has really impressed us over the last 5 years at saltash.net with his attitude, efforts and achievements. He has captained the school team in his year group for all five years winning 5 East Cornwall championships, 3 county championships and reaching the last 32 of the national cup on two occasions.

As a captain and leader he is vocal and demands high standards. He is always positive and encourages his team mates. He leads by example, giving everything on the pitch, a superb role model of how a footballer should behave. He is brave as well; in the County final against Helston, a clash of heads whilst competing for a high ball, split his head open and required a visit to hospital which meant he missed all the team celebrations at the end of the game. Hopefully this award will make up for that in some way.”

saltash.net community school was thrilled to receive a 3D Printer which had been donated by the Cornwall Manufacturers’ Group to further enhance Engineering and Design and Technology provision.

The school has already invested in one 3D Printer during the school year 2014-15, but it was proving so popular, especially with students studying for their GCSE and A Level exams, that Head of Technology, David Jolly, began liaising with local businesses and manufacturers to see if a second one could be sourced.

Ex-governor, Ken Martin, Secretary of the Cornwall Manufacturers’ Group, was able to support the school in its quest and at the end of the Autumn Term a second printer arrived in school.

Commenting on the difference the 3D Printer would have, David Jolly, said, “Being able to use a 3d printer and its software is an industry level skill. It gives our students the confidence to talk to and work with local future employers, which adds value to their education.”

Ken Martin, added, “Manufacturing/engineering is a wonderful career and is so much different than it used to be. It is vital that young people see the exciting developments such as 3D printing which can help influence their work and study choices. Manufacturing in Cornwall is vibrant and pays well and we want to let young people know about it so are delighted to support the school in this way.”

We are looking forward to welcoming you on Monday 8 February for our student-led Review.
To ensure that the day runs as smoothly as possible we would ask you to observe the following procedures:

Students
You will find the work left by your teachers through the following link; http://saltash.net/reviewday

Car Parking
All of the school car park at both the front and back (including those spaces which say reserved) is available for you to park in. If you can possibly avoid it please do not park on the road coming into school as this causes congestion. If there are cars on the road, please do not assume the car parks are full; there should be plenty of spaces.

The Review

  • Dress code for the students: We have informed the students that they do not have to wear school uniform for the Review appointment. However, we have asked them to come appropriately dressed (smart clothing) for the Review.
  • Timing: Each Review appointment will begin promptly at the stated time and a bell will ring after 15 minutes indicating that it is time for the Review to finish. Please arrive promptly for your appointment time as we have very little flexibility in the schedule to make any changes.
  • Format of the Review: Your son/daughter has been working hard to prepare a script which will lead us through the Review appointment. As we explained in an earlier letter to you ‘the Review Day meeting will enable your child to take much more ownership of their own learning, progress and development.’

Students on the Record of Need
If your son/daughter is on the school’s Record of Need and you would like to discuss any concerns you may have (whether they were raised at Review or not), Mr Skelton (SENCo) will be available on a drop-in basis from 1.00pm. He can be found in his office which is in Room 35, in the Languages corridor. If you aren’t able to meet with Mr Skelton but would like to discuss anything with him, please email him at jskelton@saltashcloud.net to make an alternative appointment.

Emergency arrangements
In the event of the fire bell going off during the day please wait for instructions from a member of staff who will escort you from the building. If this should happen when you are walking to your appointment area, please follow the signs to the nearest exit. The muster point for all staff, parents and students is the tennis courts which are situated at the back of school adjacent to the Geography and History block.

Refreshments
The saltash.net World Challenge team will be selling cold drinks and an assortment of cakes outside Room 40, near the Year 11 area throughout the day. Proceeds from this sale will go towards the World Challenge trip to Borneo.

Once again, it was by invitation that students from saltash.net community school, this year for the first time accompanied by students from Landulph Primary School, led the way at the international technology in education show (BETT) in London. On Monday 18th January, Amy Donovan and Jack Wickham from Year 10 represented the views of UK children during the opening BETT event attended by World Education Leaders, then on Wednesday and Thursday, students from years 6,7,8 and 9 presented to thousands of teachers and visiting professionals on both the main stage, and the Promethean stand.

Traditionally the annual BETT conference is not a place at which student voice is heard, and it is hard to find a stand that has students presenting on it. Once again however, students from both schools in the Saltash Multi Academy Regional Trust (SMART) were invited by one of the world leaders in technology, Promethean, to attend and talk about software they are helping to explore and develop.

The students began by presenting to a packed arena of professionals on the Secondary Live Stage, talking about their use of the Promethean ClassFlow system, and how it helps them measure their progress and achievement in lessons.

“It’s just great to be working with a company that understand how crucial students are as stakeholders in their own learning,” explained Mr Wieprecht, Head of Year 9, and the school’s link to the technology giant. “The students’ opinions are sought and valued. Technology in Education will never work unless we trust students and act on their views.”

After presenting on the stage, the students then took over the huge Promethean stand, demonstrating the ClassFlow system in practice, and leading demonstrations. Working in rotation, the students were able to really show exactly what the program could offer, and how saltash.net continues to trial the newest technology for the benefit of students.

“It was brilliant,” commented, year 7 student, Ben Carr. “I had so much fun and loved being able to present to teachers.”

“It’s so important that we are listened to,” added Amber Kelly. “If we are expected to use this, we need to make sure it works first.”

When the children were not presenting they were touring the show and advising Mr Buckley, deputy head, and Mrs Bonner, teaching assistant, what the school should invest in next. Mr Buckley explained, “As soon as the children realise that they are being treated as advisors the quality of their questioning goes through the roof, for example one student was asking about integration with Accelerated Reader!”

The students worked hard, but also got to play hard, and were treated by Promethean to a trip to see the Disney classic ‘The Lion King’. “It is the best show I’ve ever seen,” said Kyle Hollister, a Year 9 student. “I got to see ‘Matilda’ last year when we presented at BETT but I think the Lion King was even better.”
The organiser of the opening event cited the comments from our students as “The highlight of the show so far for me” and this praise was echoed by the Head of Promethean Education UK who commented on the “tremendous work” of the students.

“It’s not just about telling the story of saltash.net and our use of technology,” finished Mr Wieprecht. “It’s also about giving our young people these incredible life chances to present on stage and in public to so many people. The confidence this builds will open so many doors for them in the future, and the school’s reputation for the high calibre of our student leadership and the eloquent way our students speak grows every year.”
