Saltash.net students from Years 7, 8 and 9, as well as our friends from Landulph Primary School, recently showed fantastic grit and determination whilst competing on the saltash.net Cross Country course.

The Cross Country competition which took place on the morning of the 17th October, saw students compete in the first event of a multi-sport year-long inter-tutor tournament, representing their designated countries.

All podium finishers were presented with a trophy in a post-run presentation.  Special mention should be made of Maisie Godfrey and Henry Curtis who won their races with record breaking times of 9.32 and 9.05 respectively.  Both students rounded off a fantastic trio of wins, having both claimed the Year 7 and 8 competitions in the previous two years. Definitely two to watch out for, are the Olympics in sight?

Speaking at the end of the competition, Head of PE, Mr Hawkins, was delighted with the efforts of each year group.

“Another year and another excellent Cross Country event at saltash.net. Turnout for the races was fantastic, and the competition could not have been such a success without the great help of saltash.net’s Year 10 Sports Leaders, who marshalled the course exceptionally well. A number of students showed fantastic resilience to finish the course, supported and encouraged by their peers. Well done to all who ran!”

Saltash.net cheque handoverSaltash.net was delighted to hand a cheque worth over £1000 to St Luke’s Hospice, following fundraising efforts at the end of the 2016-17 school year.

Money was raised from a non-uniform day, but over £700 of the total £1013.27 donated, arose during Curriculum Enrichment Week when a group of 8 students spent the week creating a variety of products. They then used their entrepreneurial skills to sell them at Waitrose at the end of the week. The group received some fantastic publicity and even starred on local radio!

Nina Wearne, Community & Events Fundraising Manager for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth, visited saltash.net on Halloween and accepted the cheque during assembly before presenting the students with certificates thanking them for their hard work.

Emma Gue, Teacher of Personal Development, who organised the cheque presentation, said, ‘We were thrilled when Nina Wearne was able to come in from St Luke’s Hospice to receive our cheque. This small group of students demonstrated real passion and determination in this fundraising venture. We are so fortunate to have such active young citizens at saltash.net.’

Showcase performers take to the stage at saltash.net

On the evening of Monday 13th November, Saltash.net saw a true example of how people can come together in aid of an amazing cause for charity. ‘Shut Down the Stigma’, a showcase in support of the charity Young Minds, was held at Saltash.net to raise money and promote awareness of mental health.

Entirely down to two Year 13 students, Kari Summers and Danielle Burnard; these young women independently planned, designed and co-ordinated the event. They took it upon themselves to find a way to raise money and more importantly raise awareness for a very sensitive cause; managing to rally up a huge amount of outside support, including the contribution of many valuable raffle prizes.

Kari and Danielle are the main factors to the success of the night, from organising the arrangements of the show, advertising and selling the tickets; they truly deserve the biggest of congratulations. Without their commitment from beginning to end, the night couldn’t have happened.

The production aimed to bring awareness to the mental health issues affecting many of our society today. The showcase featured many musical and dance performances by both past and present students of Saltash.net, who all gave up their free time to contribute to the special evening. After each performance, there was a short speech, addressing the audience with background facts and information on mental health. This was equally moving and educational, really adding a special segment to the show in between each act.

To represent the huge success of the evening the final amount raised reached the large total of £780, which really exceeded initial expectations, just going to show how generous people can be in aid of such an important cause.

In addition to the talented performers, praise must also go out to the group of volunteers that helped out with preparation and assistance on the night; from helping with refreshments and raffle tickets to backstage arrangements and technical equipment. This all helped make the night run as smooth as it did. A special mention must go to the supporting teachers and staff for the guidance and support throughout the process, all making this goal achievable.

An all-round excellent evening, thoroughly enjoyed by everyone involved and a valuable addition to the school’s Be Well programme.

saltash.net-donates-foodbank

It has become something of a tradition at saltash.net community school for staff to donate to their local foodbank at Christmas time. This is now the 4th year in a row staff have shown their generosity towards those in need. For the first time this year, students have also been invited to donate, with a focus on putting other’s needs before your own.

Year 7 students Amy Snook and Leon Kirby helped to deliver the donations to Saltash foodbank where they were gratefully received by Rika Chanter.

Teacher Jennie Benzie said, “Every year I am overwhelmed by the generosity of our staff and students here at saltash.net. We know it makes such a difference to those families in need at Christmas time, and this is what makes us a true community school.”

Students sing at saltash.net's Christmas Carol service

Year 7 students at saltash.net community school excelled in their end of term Christmas Carol service at St. Stephens Church, inviting family and members of the local community to celebrate Christmas with them.

Organised by Head of Performing Arts, Ms Oatway, and Performing Arts teacher Mrs Venner, the service saw Year 7 students lead a number of musical performances and readings, assisted by a group of Year 8 students and Sixth Formers.

All students relished the opportunity to showcase their musical talents in front of their peers and parents, with performances ranging from the traditional (Katy Pike, Trinity Pollard and Leanna Reader led ‘Once in Royal David’s City’) to the modern (the whole of Year 7 sang a medley of ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ and ‘Hallelujah’).

There were also a number of powerful readings during the service, aptly starting with ‘The birth of Jesus’ from Luke 1, read by Matilda Stockley. Other readings included Carol Ann Duffy’s ‘Another Night Before Christmas’ and ‘The Christmas Truce 1914’.

A particularly spirited performer was Amelia Writer, who played a saxophone solo of ‘Walking in the Air’.

As the service drew to a close, the whole of Year 7 sang ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’, with the Year 8 band providing instrumental support. The service ended with Miss Harris leading the Year 7 ‘Signing Choir’ in a signed (and sung!) rendition of ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’.

Ms Oatway was delighted with the service.

“We are really proud of all those who took part in the Carol Service – there were some really impressive performances from students from Year 7 through to 6th Form,” she said.

Congratulations to all who performed and took part and thanks go to St Stephen’s Church, Reverend Cathy Sigrist and organist, Darren Jane.
