Procedure for Emergency School Closure

With the forecast of heavy snow showers overnight and tomorrow, we may have to make the decision to either fully or partially close the school.  If this is the case, a message will posted on the school’s website and our social media platforms.  A text message will also be sent.

We also advise that you listen to updates on BBC Radio Cornwall, Pirate FM or Heart FM during period of inclement weather.  Cornwall Council website, www.cornwall.gov.uk also lists details of school closures.  We hope not to have to take this decision, but we have to consider the safety of our students and staff travelling to and from school.  Thank you for your understanding.

Saltash.net’s Ten Tors teams took part in the Postbridge Challenge, a 12 mile charity walk on Sunday 25 February, raising £175 for the Dartmoor Rescue teams.

The team endured temperatures that were well below freezing for the day, but that didn’t affect their progress. The challenge is perfect preparation for Ten Tors, which the Year 10’s are entering as a 35 mile team, and the 6th formers as a 45 mile team this year.

The Year 10’s to take part were Beth Witton, Daniel Stowe, Nathan Delbridge, Troy Lambourne and Eric Tassart and the Year 12’s were Harry Pascoe, George Seymour, Ethan Cox, James Randall, Jack Pritchard and Danny Snook. The students were accompanied by staff members Mr Jones, Miss Newberry and Mr Drewery.

Congratulations to those who took part.

First Officer Michaela Brown with teacher Miss Markie and students

First Officer Michaela Brown with teacher Miss Markie and saltash.net students

Saltash.net was privileged to recently welcome First Officer Michaela Brown into school for the day. Invited on board were students across years 8, 10 and 11, who listened to interesting and exciting tales of how it feels to be in the driving seat of a 66 tonne machine tearing through the sky at 980 km/h!

Aspirations soared sky-high on the day, as students were encouraged to pursue their wildest dreams and explored the initial steps they need to take in order to achieve them. Budding pilots and eager Sixth Formers also took up the opportunity to speak to our high-flying guest and were left inspired and ready to work hard.

Michaela was delighted with the students’ interest in her work.

“It was a fantastic experience meeting the children from saltash.net and hearing what amazing ambitions they have for their future! I would encourage all of the children to follow their dreams and not be put off by how unrealistic it may seem at first,” she said.

We are very grateful for the time that Pilot Brown gave to visit saltash.net; she certainly left her mark on our students, it was a truly memorable day!

Little Shop of Horrors cast deliver fantastic entertainment

Saltash.net’s production of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ gave audiences four fantastic evenings of entertainment, with tremendous performances from both casts. The success of the show has been recognised by Saltash Town Council, with the production recently being presented the Citizen Award for Best Performance and the Mayor’s “Peter Stephens Best Performance Cup”.

The zany musical, written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, and tells the story of Seymour Krelborn. Seymour is a meek and dejected assistant at a floral shop who happens upon a strange plant, which he affectionately names “Audrey II”, after his crush at the shop.

Little does he know that this strange and unusual plant will develop a soulful R&B voice and an unquenchable thirst for HUMAN BLOOD. The Musical includes several well-known tunes, including the title song, “Skid Row (Downtown)”, “Somewhere That’s Green”, and “Suddenly, Seymour”.

Due to the huge amount of talent here at saltash.net, Director, Emily Venner and Musical Director, Nicola Silvester decided to have two casts of leading roles. Assuming the role of Seymour was Year 12 student Richard Tolman, in Cast 1 and Year 10 Student Brandon Escott, in Cast 2. Both boys played the parts incredibly well and the audiences couldn’t help but adore Seymour.

Performing alongside Seymour was Grace Hodge (Year 10), who played Seymour’s love interest Audrey on all four nights beautifully; engaging the audience with her kind and naïve nature. Tyler Stapleton and Tommy Williams were both outstanding as the creepy dentist, and their performance of the song “Dentist” both impressed and scared the audience equally!

The incredible voice of Plant was provided by Molly Banks and India James, wowing audiences every night with their outstanding jazzy tones. Both worked closely with Oliver Crawford, who was our amazing puppeteer.

The two different casts of Urchins- who narrate and lead the show with songs in close harmony -were played by Sophie Watson, Chloe Lynch, Megan Kelly, Eva Kleckham- Ager (Cast 1) and Molly Willis, Ellie Wanless, Jazmine Leslie and Lottie Ryder-Wearne (Cast 2).

Also deserving of mention were the band who were almost entirely student-led with Maisie Glazebrook (Year 12) on keyboard, Harry Pascoe and Tommy Williams (Year 12) on brass, Josh Dolan (Year 10) on bass, Cameron Snook (Year 9) on guitar, Matthew Chapman (Year 8) on drums and Matthew Pascoe (Year 9) on percussion- they were fantastic and it was lovely to see students represented in the band. Delicious refreshments at the performances were provided in the canteen by the Saltash.net PTA and World Challenge team.

Director, Emily Venner, expressed her delight at the success of the performance.

She said: “The annual productions have become a huge part of Performing Arts at saltash.net and they are a great opportunity for students of all ages and abilities to work together in a different environment. We’ve had students from all year group involved, whether that’s Year 13 Media and Drama students Micah Barlow and James Peek filming the show, or Kallum Eccleston from Year 8 who was our backstage manager, or the cast who ranged from Years 7 to 12.

“Thank you so much to everyone who has supported the production, including members of our community: we honestly couldn’t have done it without your support. I must end this by saying how impressed I’ve been with our amazing students; they really stepped up the challenge. It was a fun show to put together- who doesn’t love stories about man eating plants?!”

Plymouth Raiders star Zak Wells talks to saltash.net students

To celebrate World Book Day, saltash.net welcomed players from Plymouth Argyle and Plymouth Raiders into school to inspire students and act as reading role models for them.

Sixty students that attend the school’s basketball club and represent the school’s football teams were invited into the library to enjoy a book quiz, before being joined by Plymouth Argyle’s Luke McCormick and Robbert Te Loeke and Zak Wells, Eddie Matthew, Will Neighbour and Stefan Djukic from Plymouth Raiders.

The players spoke about their life journey, and how valuable reading and studying have been for them, before moving around the room for a Q and A session and to discuss books students had chosen from the library.

The players talked to the students about what they enjoyed to read and their own experiences of school life and studying, as well as the grit and resilience required to get to where they wanted to be. Following this, the players were more than happy to pose for a few selfies, which the students (and some staff members) were very keen to take!

Thank you to the players and their clubs for coming in to inspire our young people.

Year 8 students tackle social issues in ‘Community Day’

Handprints from Year 8's Community Day

Reflecting on their own behaviour, tackling racism and homophobia, building their own understanding of tolerance and equality – these were all things covered at year 8’s recent ‘Community Day’ at saltash.net school.

“At saltash.net community school, we’ve always believed in providing the children with a holistic education,’ said Deputy Headteacher, Jeremy Skelton. “The ‘Community Day’ was our creative approach to try to help students understand some complex and current issues in a fun and non-threatening way but with a meaningful approach. This school is all about improving the life chances of children and learning how to really get on with others will contribute to this.”

All of the sessions, led by both school staff and external contributors, were interactive with students trying a range of activities from using the ‘fogging’ technique to combat verbal bullying to taking part in a session around respect and identity with well-known band LED. LED’s session culminated in a concert style performance complete with high tech sound and lights.

To finish the day, students were asked to place their own personal goal on a handprint which is to form part of a whole-school installation to grace the main reception area of the school. Visitors to the school will soon be greeted by a physical representation of the hopes, dreams and aspirations of all 1400+ students and staff.

Head of Year 8, Emma Metters was really pleased with the way the children responded to the material presented on the day. “Our Year 8 students were thoughtful and mature in dealing with these complex issues,” she said. “We feel privileged, excited and proud to be the first group to have contributed to the school’s hand print tree.”

Holly-Hale-presentation

Saltash.net student Holly Hale and her pony Jack recently competed in the Pony Club Dengie Dressage Winter Championships at Addington Manor Equestrian Centre, Buckingham, delivering an extremely impressive performance. To qualify for the competition, Holly had to compete in two preliminary rounds and finish in the top three.

This was a national competition with competitors from across the UK, including Ireland and Scotland. In her class, Holly won her arena competition on 72.42%, which was also the highest score of the arena events which led to the final.

The pair finished second overall on 69.19%, which is a fantastic achievement against very stiff competition. Holly and Jack have also been selected to represent Cornwall in the British Dressage Inter County Competition due to be held at Bicton Arena 6th and 7th May, where they will compete against teams from Devon, Somerset, Dorset and Gloucestershire.

We are very proud of Holly’s achievements, and we all wish her (and Jack) lots of luck for the next stage at Bicton. Well done Holly!

Saltash.net Year 9 football team clinch second successive county championship

Mr Budd and captain Jensen BryanSaltash.net’s Year 9 boys’ football team have been crowned Cornwall county champions for the second year running, following their victory in Thursday’s county final.

The side, coached by PE teacher Mr. Budd, defeated West Cornwall Champions Richard Lander 3-2. Saltash.net strode into an early lead, finishing the first half with a 3-0 lead, with goals from captain Jensen Bryan and 2 from Kieran O’Melia. The second half saw Richard Lander come back strongly, scoring 2 goals to leave saltash.net looking to hold on to a slender lead.

A fantastic defensive effort saw saltash.net maintain their lead, to avenge the final defeat they suffered against the same opponents in Year 7. The win marks an incredible record of 2 years unbeaten and only 1 defeat in 3 years in the same competition for the side.

To advance to the county final, the boys put in an excellent performance in the East Cornwall Championship final, beating a very strong Wadebridge team 3-1, with goals from Kieran O’Melia (2) and Leighton Poolman.

This victory follows the side’s success in the U13 tournament last year, where they secured a 2-1 win over West Cornwall Champions Mounts Bay Academy in a very exciting final.

Mr. Budd, who has coached the team for the past three years, was extremely proud of them.

“To win back to back titles is a huge achievement and no easy task with the high standard of schools’ football in Cornwall, with some very strong sides in the county.  Their sustained success is a real testament to the boys’ commitment and ability,” he said.

Massive congratulations to the students on their success.
